a. The features of ceramic foam filter
The ceramic foam filter is a kind of porous material with 3 dimensional structure to filter the impurity and non metallic inclusions of the molten metal. It's been widely used in casting parts like brake disc, brake drum, cylinder body and head, shaft etc. It will efficiently perform the following,
b. There are mainly 3 kinds of ceramic foam filters.
1. silicon carbide based
Silicon carbide are usually used for iron, copper casting in which pouring temperature is lower than 1470 degree. The porosity varies from 10ppi to 30ppi accordingly. The regular sizes include,
2. alumina based
Alumina based ceramic foam filter is applied in aluminum casting parts in which pouring temperature is normally not more than 1100 degree. The regular sizes are as below with 20ppi-50ppi with or w/o chamfer and gasket.
3. zirconia based
Zirconia based ceramic foam filter is treated as main filter material in steel casting such as carbon steel, SS steel and steel alloy etc. The application temperature is up to 1700 degree. Please find the regular item below.
c. Does the filter itself affect the flow rate and pouring time?
Not at all. The filter itself will not affect the flow rate of the molten metal. The choke of gating system play a key role for flow rate. It is highly recommended the filter area has to be larger than the gating system choke as suggested below.
3:1 for grey iron casting
4:1 for alumina and copper casting
5:1 even bigger for ductile iron or steel casting
